Mountaineering Acoustics Network

Welcome to the MAN network!

Join Our Team!

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers and core members to help shape the future of the network.

The Mountaineering Acoustics Network (MAN) is a non-profit organization established in 2025, and it is a part of the Mountaineering Acoustics Network & Terrain Lab Equipment (MANTLE). We organize field recording sessions "soundex", which are designed to promote the idea of mountaineering acoustics.
Mountaineering Acoustics

Quest for the absolute episteme

We document the auditory landscapes of high-altitude mountains as well as pristine glacial areas, capturing the idiosyncrasy sounds that define these breathtaking natural spectacles. By employing a range of highly sensitive audio devices, including professional microphones, geophones and hydrophones, alongside advanced field geological equipment, we aim to make the spiritual nature of these high-altitude regions more intelligible to human ears and souls.

Building on this foundation, we strive to apply Archaeoacoustics approaches to our profound mountaineering acoustics practice. Our dedication lies in exploring the subtle but plenitude acoustic environments where ancient geological forces once shaped the landscape irreversibly, allowing us to insensibly recall auditory experiences that have nearly vanished from the modern world.

Outdoor Sound Research

Pursue the ideal integration of techne-man

For the audio technologies aspect, we are open to incorporating virtual acoustics technologies for sound reinforcement, which will enhance our ability to capture and manipulate the auditory experience vigorously in these extreme environments. To further enhance our exploration, we also intend to introduce an innovative field recording method set against the backdrop of alpine climbing, and make it a datum for this new interdisciplinary field. The final research outcome will be presented in a multimedia format, featuring professional audio recordings, images of mountaineering-recording routes, and geographical data.

Geology Field Study

Journey from a finite science to the infinite art

Through those comprehensive approaches, we seek to reveal the intricate relationship between auditory landscapes, geological history, and the depth of human-machine intelligence in these majestic high-altitude mountains, all through a series of daring "soundex" sessions or actual summit expeditions.
