Mountaineering Acoustics Network

Acoustic Research at the Summit of Discovery
The Mountaineering Acoustics Network (MAN), launched in 2025, is the world's first not-for-profit initiative dedicated to defining and advancing mountaineering acoustics. By combining frontier machine learning techniques with immersive outdoor field research, we champion the emerging field of mountaineering acoustics and drive innovation in acoustic science for mountainous environments.
Mountaineering Acoustics

Quest for the absolute episteme

We document the auditory landscapes of high-altitude mountains as well as pristine glacial areas, capturing the idiosyncrasy sounds that define these breathtaking natural spectacles. By employing a range of highly sensitive audio devices, including professional microphones, geophones and hydrophones, alongside advanced field geological equipment, we aim to make the spiritual nature of these high-altitude regions more intelligible to human ears and souls.

Building on this foundation, we strive to apply Archaeoacoustics approaches to our profound mountaineering acoustics practice. Our dedication lies in exploring the subtle but plenitude acoustic environments where ancient geological forces once shaped the landscape irreversibly, allowing us to insensibly recall auditory experiences that have nearly vanished from the modern world.

Outdoor Sound Research

Pursue the ideal integration of techne-man

We bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and cutting-edge technology through innovative audio research in extreme mountain environments. Our interdisciplinary approach combines neural audio processing, advanced field recording techniques, and archaeoacoustic methodologies to capture and preserve the ephemeral soundscapes of challenging terrains and eternalize their echos.

Through computational bioacoustics and ecoacoustics research, we document the acoustic signatures of mountain ecosystems and their biological communities, and explore algorithm-level optimization of data storage methods. This fusion of human intuition and technological precision enables us to document, analyze, and share the profound acoustic experiences that define our relationship with the natural world, advancing both the science of mountaineering acoustics and our understanding of humanity's place within these majestic landscapes.

Geology Field Study

Journey from a finite science to the infinite art

Through those comprehensive approaches, we seek to reveal the intricate relationship between auditory landscapes, geological history, and the depth of human-machine intelligence in these majestic high-altitude mountains, all through a series of daring "soundex" sessions and actual summit expeditions.

To further enhance our exploration, we also intend to introduce an innovative field recording & field analysis method set against the backdrop of alpine climbing, and make it a datum for this new interdisciplinary field.
